Common Questions

FAQ

What is an Enrolled Agent?+
An Enrolled Agent (E.A.) is a federally licensed tax practitioner authorized by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before the IRS. It's the highest credential the IRS awards specifically for tax matters. Both James and David hold this designation.
Do you work with clients outside of Utah?+
Yes — we serve clients nationwide. While we're based in Ogden, Utah, most of our workflow is fully remote through our secure client portal. You can upload documents, receive completed returns, and communicate with our team from anywhere in the country.
Are you open year-round, or just during tax season?+
We're open all year long — not just during tax season. Whether you need bookkeeping, tax planning, IRS representation, or just have a question in July, we're here. Many of our most valuable client interactions happen outside of tax season.
How do I get started as a new client?+
Fill out the inquiry form on this page, or give us a call or text at (801) 755-6027. We'll reach out to schedule a brief consultation, discuss your needs, and get you set up in our secure portal so you can start sending documents right away.
What documents do I need to provide?+
It depends on your situation — but typically: W-2s and 1099s, last year's return, Social Security numbers for you and dependents, mortgage interest statements, and any deductible expense records. We'll send you a personalized checklist once we know more about your situation.
What does tax preparation cost?+
Fees vary based on the complexity of your return or engagement. We're transparent about pricing — you'll know the cost before we begin. Contact us for a free initial consultation and quote. We believe in fair pricing for genuinely personal service.
I haven't filed in several years. Can you help?+
Yes — and you're not alone. This is more common than you'd think. As Enrolled Agents, we handle prior-year filings and IRS resolution regularly. We'll help you get caught up, understand your options, and get back in good standing with the IRS.
Do you handle multiple businesses or real estate?+
Absolutely — this is a specialty of ours. We regularly work with clients who own multiple LLCs, hold real estate portfolios, operate S-Corps, or have complex multi-state situations. If you're unsure whether we can handle your situation, just ask — the answer is almost certainly yes.
I received an IRS notice. What should I do?+
Don't panic — most IRS notices are not as serious as they look, but you should respond promptly and correctly. Call or text us at (801) 755-6027 or email info@jktaxut.com and we'll review the notice, explain what it means, and handle the IRS response on your behalf.
How long will it take to get my refund?+
For e-filed returns with direct deposit, the IRS typically issues refunds within 21 days. Paper-filed returns take longer — generally 6 to 8 weeks. Keep in mind these are IRS processing times and are outside our control once your return is filed. You can check your refund status anytime using the IRS's official tool: IRS Where's My Refund ↗
If I file an extension, does that extend my deadline to pay?+
No — this is one of the most common misconceptions in tax. A filing extension gives you more time to file your return, but it does not extend the deadline to pay any taxes owed. Your payment is still due by April 15. If you owe taxes and don't pay by that date, the IRS will begin accruing both interest and a failure-to-pay penalty on the unpaid balance — even if you have a valid extension in place. If you think you may owe, we can help you estimate your liability before April 15 so you can make a payment and avoid unnecessary penalties.
How long does it take you to prepare and file my return?+
We work on a first-come, first-served basis. Outside of peak tax season, we can typically turn around most returns in 1 to 2 business days. During the busy season — generally February through April — it may take up to a week depending on volume and complexity. The best way to get to the front of the line is to get us your documents early. We'll always keep you updated on timing once we have everything we need.
